Why? Because deep down, we’re all hoping there’s some ridiculously easy shortcut that makes cleaning faster, cheaper, and maybe even a little more fun. 

If someone tells me I can toss a ball of aluminum foil into my dishwasher and suddenly get sparkling silverware, you better believe part of me wants that to be true. No scrubbing? Quick and easy results? Sign me up! 😂

So just for you my Clean Freak Fam I rolled up my sleeves and put some of the most popular dishwasher tricks to the test. I added the foil. I tried the hacks. I waited for the amazing transformation. And what did I get? Mostly a dishwasher full of disappointment and silverware that looked suspiciously... exactly the same.

But that’s the fun part. You don’t have to sacrifice your dishwasher in the name of internet science because I already did it for you! Today we’re separating the dishwasher hacks that actually work from the ones that deserve to be rinsed, drained, and sent straight down the internet garbage disposal.

The claim is that a crumpled ball of aluminum foil in your utensil basket miraculously de-tarnishes every fork and spoon in the load. Here's the catch: foil can lift tarnish from silverware, but only where it physically touches the metal. A little ball rattling around your basket is going to "restore" maybe one spoon and a couple of tines if you're really fortunate. Everything else comes out exactly as dull as it went in.

You're in a hurry, the pod is right there, so you chuck it in the bottom of the machine and slam the door. Feels efficient. It is not. When a pod sits loose at the bottom, it dissolves during the early pre-rinse phase and dumps all your cleaning power down the drain before the main wash even starts. The result is a cycle that runs on basically flavored water and dishes that come out looking suspiciously like they did going in.

This one sounds so cozy and smart that people swear by it: drape a towel over the open dishwasher door to soak up excess moisture and speed up drying. Please don't. Draping a towel across the door can interfere with your control panel and door latch, and worse, it robs you of the free sanitizing power you already paid for. That leftover steam at the end of the cycle is doing real work killing bacteria on your dishes.

This is the question that has started numerous debates in kitchens and online. The short answer for most modern dishwashers is: No, you do not need to rinse. Why? Today's machines and enzyme cleaners are actually designed to cling to food particles, and many use sensors that read how dirty the water is to decide how hard to work. When you send in spotless, pre-rinsed plates, the dishwasher thinks the job is easy and gives you a lighter wash. In other words, over-rinsing can quietly give you worse results.

You do still want to scrape. Dump the big stuff, the chicken bones, etc., straight into the trash or compost.

Simply put Clean Freak Fam, viral does not mean reliable! Sometimes a cleaning hack goes viral because it works, and sometimes it goes viral because someone threw a ball of aluminum foil into a dishwasher and the internet collectively said, “Well... I gotta try that.” 😂

The truth is, the best dishwasher tricks are usually the boring ones. Load it right, use the right cleaning product, keep it clean, and let the machine do what it was designed to do. 

So go and load with confidence! Your dishes will be cleaner, your dishwasher will be happier, and you can be sure your dishes and silverware will be as clean as possible!
