Do you need a vacation? Well, when you finally make it to your destination of choice:

You swing open that hotel room door, kick off your shoes, and belly flop onto a bed that looks like it belongs in a magazine. Perfection, right? Well, hold back that belly flop for one second. 

Behind those crisp white sheets and that fancy little chocolate on the pillow hides a dirty little secret. Although the hotel cleaning staff does their best, many times hotel rooms have to get cleaned fast, and "fast" does not always mean "deep." Studies have found that some of the surfaces you touch most are also the ones that get skipped most. But do not panic and do not check out early. In about 90 seconds you can turn any room into your own sparkling fortress of freshness, and I am going to show you exactly how. Grab your travel-size arsenal, because we are about to make housekeeping jealous.

If hotel surfaces had a hall of shame, the remote would be wearing the crown. It is one of the dirtiest objects in the entire room, passed from hand to hand to hand, and almost never wiped down between guests. Think about how many thumbs have mashed that volume button. Now think about touching it right before you grab a handful of fries. Yeah. Give it a quick once-over with a disinfecting wipe, paying attention to the buttons and the back where fingers wrap around. Ten seconds of effort, a whole lot of peace of mind.

These are the silent workhorses of any hotel room. Every single person who enters flips the lights and grabs the handles, yet a rushed cleaning crew almost never gets to them. The bathroom switch, the bedside lamp knob, the deadbolt, the door handle, the closet pull. Hit them all with a wipe. They take just a few seconds each, and they are the exact spots your hands go the moment you walk in and the moment you walk out.

Sure, the bathroom looks shiny when you walk in, but shiny and clean are not always the same thing. The faucet handles and the counter around the sink get a lot of traffic and not a lot of love. This is where your toothbrush lives, where your face cloth lands, and where you splash water all over your hands. Give the handles, the counter, and the edge of the sink a fresh wipe so you can brush your teeth without a second thought.

Here is the spot you will touch the most while half asleep. The bedside table, the alarm clock, the lamp switch, and that old hotel phone nobody ever wipes down. You will set your glasses there, your water there, maybe your snacks there. So before you settle in for the night, give the tabletop and that phone a quick swipe. It is the last thing you touch before lights out and the first thing you reach for in the morning.

Here is the beauty of all this. You do not need a cleaning cart or a chemistry degree.
