Hey Clean Freak Fam!
Are you feeling motivated today? If you are like me, some days yes… and some days not so much!
Is there a secret to staying motivated?
My Mom and Dad used to tell my sister and I that it is okay to fall but when we fall (and we all will) the secret is to keep getting back up. The same is true with motivation.
About this time of a new year people start to set aside their new year plans and motivation. Time, stress, just life starts to get in our way!
Here’s a simple truth: staying motivated to clean isn’t about loving chores or having endless energy. It’s about creating simple habits, small wins, and a mindset that makes cleaning feel doable instead of dreadful. Let’s break down how to get motivated and more importantly, stay motivated when it comes to keeping your home clean!
Let’s Go! 👇
1. Clean for the Feeling, Not Just the Result
A clean home is about how it feels. Less stress. More peace. When motivation is low, remind yourself what cleaning actually gives you.
That calm when you walk into a tidy room. That satisfaction of bare counters. That deep breath you take when things feel under control again.
You’re not cleaning just to clean, you’re cleaning for your future self. The one who gets to relax in a space that supports them instead of stressing them out.
2. Start Small (Seriously Small)
One of the biggest motivation killers? Thinking you need to clean everything.
Let’s be clear here: You Don’t!
Start with one surface. One room. One task. Most of the time, momentum kicks in and you’ll keep going but even if you don’t, you still made progress.
Cleaning motivation grows when success feels achievable. Small wins add up fast, and suddenly the mess doesn’t feel so overwhelming anymore.
3. Create Simple Cleaning Systems
Motivation fades but systems save the day.
Here at Clean That Up we do this every week. As a team we specifically talk about ways we can build simple systems to help free up more time to do things better and more efficiently. But more importantly our goal is to have more time for the more important things in life!
So, instead of relying on bursts of energy, build simple routines into your week. Same days. Same tasks. Same flow. When cleaning becomes predictable, it becomes easier and easier means you’re more likely to stick with it.
Daily resets, weekly deep cleans, and monthly maintenance keep mess from turning into chaos. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s consistency that makes your life easier.

4. Change the Way You Talk About Cleaning
Did you know this? When we talk (internally or out loud) our heart listens! If every cleaning session starts with “ugh, I hate this,” motivation doesn’t stand a chance.
Try reframing it:
“I’m resetting my space.”
“I’m taking care of my home.”
“I’m doing something for myself today.”
(I personally LOVE this one!)
Cleaning isn’t a punishment it’s a form of self-care. And when you stop beating yourself up for missed days or messy moments, it becomes much easier to get back on track.
The Clean Takeaway!
Getting motivated to clean is great but staying motivated is what truly changes your home and your life for the better. Clean for the feeling, start small, rely on systems, and give yourself grace, cleaning stops feeling like a constant battle.
You don’t need to do it all today. Just do something. Future you will thank you and so will your floors, counters, and sanity.
