Hello again my Fellow Clean Freaks! ๐
Today we have a real comeback story!ย
You walk into a thrift store, minding your own business, and then you spot it! A rusty cast iron pan sitting on a shelf looking like it has seen some things. Most people keep walking. Not me! I saw potential. I saw history. I saw a pan that just needed a little love, some elbow grease, and a proper seasoning to get back in the game.ย
As a professional cleaner, I have learned one important lesson. Rust does not mean ruined. And cast iron might be one of the most misunderstood tools in the kitchen. Today, I am breaking down how to clean and season cast iron the right way so it lasts for years and cooks like a dream.
Letโs Go! ๐
๐ฅ Step One: Removing Rust the Smart Way
You do not need fancy chemicals to remove rust. One of my favorite methods uses a potato and coarse salt. Scrub the pan, let the salt do the work, and watch that rust lift away. It is simple, effective, and surprisingly satisfying.
If a few stubborn spots hang on, steel wool handles the job just fine. Cast iron is tougher than people think.

๐ฅ Step Two: Drying Matters More Than You Think
After rinsing the pan, drying it fully is critical. Moisture is rustโs best friend. I towel dry first, then place the pan in a hot oven for a few minutes. This step prevents flash rust and sets you up for successful seasoning.
๐ซ Step Three: Seasoning Builds Protection
Seasoning is where the magic happens. This is not just about making the pan look good. Proper seasoning creates a protective layer that prevents rust and gives you that coveted nonstick surface.
The oil you choose matters. You want something with a high smoke point. Over the years, I have tested a lot of oils, and avocado oil consistently performs well. It handles high heat and polymerizes beautifully, which is exactly what you want during seasoning.
The goal is not to drown the pan in oil. You want a thin, even layer over every surface. Inside, outside, handle included. I apply the oil and then wipe it around thoroughly with a paper towel. Then, and this part is important, I wipe it again with a clean, dry towel to remove any excess. If the pan looks greasy, there is too much oil.

Too much oil leads to sticky spots, uneven seasoning, and smoke that will make your smoke detector earn its paycheck. Thin layers are the secret. Think of it like waxing a car. Less is more.
I place the pan upside down in a 450 degree oven with a baking sheet underneath just in case. Then I let it bake for about 30 minutes. During this time, the oil bonds to the metal and forms that protective coating.
Repeat this three to five times and you will see and feel the difference immediately!
๐ณ Step Four: The Egg Test
If an egg slides across the pan without sticking, You nailed it. That is the moment cast iron earns its place in your kitchen.
Step Five:ย Daily Maintenance Care
Clean Right Away After Use: It is best to clean the pan while it is still warm, as this prevents food from sticking and makes residue easier to remove.
Actually, Soap is Okay? ย Contrary to popular belief, a little dish soap will not destroy the seasoning (patina).
Remove Burned On Bits: Use a pan scraper. For stubborn, stuck-on food, you can simmer a little water in the pan to loosen it or use coarse salt as an abrasive cleaner.
Dry Thoroughly: Moisture is the enemy of cast iron and causes rust.
Oil It: After drying, apply a very light coat of oil (Avocado Oil) to the entire surface, then wipe away any excess.
Store Properly: Store in a dry place.ย
Avoid:
Never put it in the dishwasher.
Never put cold water in a blazing hot pan, as it can crack the iron.ย
