Sometimes I wonder if they call them blinds because we are surprisingly good at being blind to how quickly the grime builds up on them! 

But when we really take a close we quickly realize blinds are quiet dust magnets. Slowly collecting dust, pollen, pet hair and grime until the sunlight hits them just right and then you see just how much dirt has been hiding in plain sight. Of course, you can always turn them in the opposite direction and pretend you fixed the problem. Out of sight, out of mind, right? Of course not!

Today, we are actually going to explain how to clean blinds the right way! Trust me my Clean Freak Fam, it is much quicker and easier than you might think. Are you ready to finally open your eyes to clean blinds?

This is the golden rule of Clean That Up, and it applies to almost everything in your home: dust before you clean. Grab a simple Swiffer duster and start at the top, working your way down to the floor. The benefit of the Swiffer is that it actually traps the dust instead of flinging it into the air to resettle five seconds later. Get between every slat, and do not forget the back side, because dust finds a way to even defy gravity!.

The cleaner you grab depends entirely on what your blinds are made of. For plastic, vinyl, or aluminum, a few squirts of classic blue Dawn dish soap in about a gallon of water is all you need. For real wood blinds, swap the Dawn for a capful of Murphy Oil Soap, which cleans beautifully without drying out or damaging the wood.

This is the technique you will end up using all over your house. Towel one gets dipped in your cleaning mix and wrung out well, then wipes top to bottom to lift away grime and buildup. Towel two gets dipped in plain water, wrung out, and wipes down everything again to rinse away that soap. Towel three is a clean, dry microfiber towel to buff away any water spots and streaks. Do not skip the rinse step, because leftover soap dries sticky and undoes all your hard work.

Cellular and fabric blinds do not like moisture, and too much water will ruin them. For these, your best bet is a thorough vacuum with the soft brush attachment. If a stubborn spot is bugging you, dab it with a tiny bit of dish soap and water, rinse, and dry it as fast as possible. If they are truly filthy, it is often smarter to call a professional who has the right tools.

For plastic, vinyl, or faux wood blinds caked with kitchen grease or garage grime, take the deep clean up a notch. Remove the blinds, fill your tub with an inch or two of soapy water, and scrub gently with a soft bristle brush. Rinse well, then dry them completely with a towel or out in the sunshine before rehanging.

Dust your blinds one to two times a month to stay ahead of buildup. Save the full deep clean for once a year, usually around spring cleaning. And if one set of blinds is getting dirty faster than the rest, clean it sooner rather than later so it never snowballs into a big job.
