Hey Clean Freak Fam!

Brandon back again!

Now close your eyes, take a deep breath and whatever you do: Don’t look down!

Dust bunny tumbleweeds, mystery crumbs, and that one sticky spot no one will admit to? A true fright to behold for all of us Clean Freaks!

Good news: You don’t need to Mop til’ You Drop.  These five tips will make floor cleaning faster, easier, and keep them cleaner way longer and they work on pretty much any floor you’ve got!

Let’s Go! 👇

🧹 1. Always Start With a Dry Clean

Skipping this step and going straight to mopping is how you create indoor mud soup. Hair sticks, dirt smears, and suddenly your mop is just redecorating.

Pro tip: Use a vacuum with a soft roller brush to avoid scratching floors, and grab the brush attachment for edges and baseboards. If you see dirt now, vacuum it now.

🧴 2. Use a Neutral pH Floor Cleaner

Neutral pH cleaners are the safest and most effective choice for most hard floors. They clean without stripping finishes or damaging the surface over time.

Say it with me: The label is the law.

Always follow the dilution instructions on the label. Using more product does not mean better results. Also a spray bottle helps control application and helps keep floors streak free.

Pro Tip: Skip harsh cleaners! They can strip finishes and leave floors sticky (aka dirt magnets). Stick with a neutral pH cleaner like Zep, EcoLab, or Fabuloso for streak-free results.

If your floor feels tacky after cleaning… congratulations, you’ve got floor cleaner ‘sticking’ around! Sticky floors attract dirt, which means your floors never really stay clean.

Pro Tip: Typically you won’t need an additional rinse after using a neutral cleaner. However, depending on the product you use if you are noticing a residue, make sure  you give the floor a good rinse with just warm water as a final step after you are done with the cleaning stage.

🧽 3. Clean in Small Sections

Don’t spray the whole house like you’re putting out a fire.

Work in manageable sections so your cleaner does not dry on the floor before you mop it up. Spray an area about five by five feet at a time and clean as you go.

Always mop with the grain or texture of the floor to avoid streaks. Keep mop heads damp, not dripping, especially on wood floors where excess moisture can cause damage.

LVP? Mop with the grain. That’s how you actually remove grime instead of just pushing it around.

🪣 4. Stop the Mop-Water Madness

If your mop water starts looking like brown soup: STOP! You’re just spreading dirty water and grime back onto clean floors.

Change the water often and frequently switch out to clean mop heads and/or flat mop pads.

Rinse or change mop heads and flat mop pads often. If your mop head or pad starts looking gray, it is time to change it. Dirty mop heads and pads only make more work in the end.

Pro Tip: Rinsing flat mop pads in the sink running clean water over them can save time and produce better results.

🚪 5. Prevent Dirt Before It Starts

Prevention is the secret to floors that stay cleaner longer.

Build a routine. Vacuum once or twice a week and mop weekly. Waiting until floors look dirty only makes cleaning harder and more time consuming.

The best cleaning hack? Less dirt.

  • Rugs at every entrance

  • Shoes off (non-negotiable in my house)

  • Furniture pads to avoid chair-scratch heartbreak

💫What is a good DYI Floor Cleaner?💫

Two of our weekly subscribers wrote in with the same burning question…so let’s dive in.

 🧪 DIY Floor Cleaning Option

For everyday maintenance, a simple DIY cleaner works surprisingly well. Mix a few drops of mild dish soap into warm water. That is it. Keep it light, because too much soap will leave residue.
