Hey Clean Freaks!

Grilling Season is here! Can you smell the burgers, hot dogs and brats wafting through the air yet?

If you've been side-eyeing your grill wondering whether it's safe to fire up, you're in the right place. Today we're turning that crusty, greasy beast back into the shiny grilling machine of your dreams. And the best part? Once you see how good it can look, you're going to WANT to keep it that way all season long.ย

Let's go! ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿงฝ Tip #1: Clean the Grates After Every Single Use

I know, I know. Not exactly groundbreaking advice. But hear me out. The reason this is the number one habit of every clean grill owner is because the second you skip it, that burnt food and grease bake right onto your grates the next time you fire up. The longer you wait, the harder it gets. A 30 second wipe today saves you a 30 minute scrub later!

๐Ÿ”‘ Pro Tip: Skip the stainless steel wire brushes. Those little bristles can break off, end up in your food, and land you in the ER. Not a fun way to end a cookout. Reach for the Barbecue Daddy or Mr. Barbecue instead. You dip the pad in ice water, run it across a warm grill, and it steams the gunk right off. Safer, smarter, and weirdly satisfying.

๐Ÿงฐ Tip #2: When in Doubt, Deep Clean

If your grill is past the "quick wipe" stage and into "I'm a little nervous to open this thing" territory, it's time for a real deep clean. Pull out the grates, the flavorizers (those metal heat shields underneath), and the grease tray. Drop them all into a plastic bin so they can soak while you tackle the rest.

Before they soak, grab a plastic putty knife and scrape off the easy stuff. The big chunks of char, the flaky burnt bits, all of it. You're not looking for perfection here. You're just clearing the way so your degreaser can do the heavy lifting on what's actually stuck.

๐Ÿ”‘ Pro Tip: Plastic putty knives are gentler than metal and won't scratch up your grates. ๐Ÿšจ Only use plastic putty knives when the grill and grates are cool. Also, always wear gloves and old clothes for this job. Grill grime stains hands and shirts in ways you would not believe.

๐Ÿงด Tip #3: Pick the Right Degreaser for the Job

For most grills, plain old Dawn dish soap with warm water in your soaking tote works great. It's gentle but cuts through baked on grease really well. Just don't go overboard or you'll be dealing with a bubble bath situation.

If your grill is REALLY rough? Step it up to Simple Green.

What if it's bordering on archaeological dig? Zep Oven and Grill Cleaner is your heavy hitter. Just be careful where you spray it and always test a small spot first. Whatever you do, never mix cleaners. Pick one and let it work.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Tip #4: Don't Forget the Inside

Once the grates are soaking, head back to the grill body. Use that same plastic putty knife to scrape the sides and the bottom of the firebox. Push everything down toward the center where the grease tray pulls out. A small detail brush or even an old toothbrush helps you get into the corners the putty knife can't reach.

From here you have two options. If you'd rather not use chemicals inside the grill, just dry wipe everything with paper towels. That'll knock down most of the surface grease. If you want it really clean, hit it with Dawn Powerwash, Simple Green, or Zep. Let it sit, then scrub with a Scrub Daddy. Steel wool (grade 0000) works on tough spots, but be careful around stainless steel because it can scratch.

๐Ÿ”‘ Pro Tip: The longer you let your cleaner sit, the less you have to scrub. Spray it down, walk away, grab a cold one, come back. Let chemistry do the work for you.

โœจ Tip #5: Make the Outside Shine

The outside of your grill is what your friends and neighbors actually see, so this is where I get a little extra. Mix some dish soap and warm water in a spray bottle, spray the whole exterior, and scrub with a non-scratch sponge. Pay extra attention to the side shelves where raw meat and sticky sauces tend to live.

Rinse with a damp microfiber or the hose, then buff dry with a clean microfiber cloth to avoid streaks and water spots. If you've got a little rust starting to form, Bar Keepers Friend Soft Cleanser is magic. Same goes for stainless steel that's looking dull from hard water. It brings the shine right back.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Tip #6: Keep It Clean All Season

Once everything is back together, run the grill on high for 10 to 15 minutes to burn off any leftover residue. Then commit to these three habits and your grill will outlive most of your kitchen appliances:

โœ… Always use a cover, especially if it lives outside
โœ… Clean the grates after every single use
โœ… Deep clean the whole thing at least once a year

๐Ÿ”‘ Pro Tip: Once you know how to deep clean a grill, keep an eye on Facebook Marketplace and curbside finds. People give away "broken" grills all the time that just need a good scrub. Free grill, working perfectly, all because you knew what to do. That's a Clean Freak power move.
