Of course, you wash your hands after using the bathroom! And yet you are holding a device in your hand or to your face that carries up to ten times more bacteria than the porcelain throne we are so careful about. Your phone has been to the gym, the grocery cart, the restaurant table, and yes, into the bathroom with you. The fix takes minutes and almost zero elbow grease.

Your phone lives in the warm, dark, humid pocket paradise that bacteria dream about, then meets your face and your food. Studies routinely find phones carrying more colony-forming units than a toilet seat, including the usual unpleasant suspects like E. coli and staph. Screens get the worst of it because your fingertips touch everything you touch all day and then transfer it straight to your phone. Ewwwww!

Power down and unplug first. Grab a soft microfiber towel and lightly dampen it with a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or a screen-safe cleaner. Wipe the screen, the back, and the sides in one gentle pass, then buff dry with the clean side of the cloth. Do not over wet the device, do not spray directly onto the phone, and skip the paper towels that scratch. That is genuinely the whole routine.

Please, I am begging you, put down the glass cleaner and the kitchen spray. Windex, bleach, vinegar, and hand sanitizer all strip the oleophobic coating that keeps your screen smudge-resistant and smooth. Once that coating is gone, it does not come back. Paper towels, makeup remover pads, and the corner of your shirt all leave micro-scratches too. When in doubt, microfiber and a light touch win every single time.

Your case is at the forefront of the grime. It traps skin oil, dust, and pocket lint against the phone all day, and that inner surface almost never gets touched. Give it a proper clean once a week and it takes just a few minutes.

Start by popping the case off completely so you can reach both sides. For a clear or plastic case, wipe it down with a soft cloth and a little warm soapy water, paying extra attention to the raised camera rim and the button cutouts where gunk piles up. For a silicone case, warm soapy water works great and lifts the sticky film that attracts every crumb in your pocket. For stubborn grime in tight corners, a soft-bristle toothbrush. Rinse off any soap, then, and this is the step people can forget, let the case air dry completely before you put your phone back in! 

Leather cases are the exception, so keep those dry and use a barely-damp cloth only, no soaking.

Wipe off the visible grease first, since UV kills germs but does not remove smudges, then let the light finish the job.
