Let’s be real for a second Clean Freak Fam:

Nobody dreams about cleaning toilets. Wait, wait unless you are one of many people who have nightmares where they panic because they can’t find a clean toilet and when they do it is suddenly out of order or worse yet the toilet is a complete filthy disaster… Sorry, analyzing dreams is not one of my skill sets! LOL and Yes, I’ve had that dream too! 

From a practical point of view, scrubbing toilets may not be the first thing that comes to mind on a relaxing Saturday morning. But hey We ARE Clean Freaks! The sense of accomplishment and freshness that follows make the effort well worth it! And the results can be very satisfying!

I have cleaned thousands of toilets as a professional janitor. Offices, schools, commercial buildings, and yes, some bathrooms have literally made me pause and rethink my career choices and my dreams!

But along the way, I learned something important. A truly clean toilet is not about scrubbing harder. It is about using the right order, the right tools, and a few pro-level habits most people never think about.

This is the step almost everyone skips, and it causes most toilet cleaning frustration.

Before you spray a single drop of cleaner, dry dust the entire toilet. Hair, dust, and debris turn into a sticky mess once liquid hits them. Instead of removing grime, you end up smearing it around.

Use a Swiffer, paper towel, or even toilet paper. It takes less than a minute and makes every step after this much easier.

Clean smarter, not stickier.

If you never remove your toilet seat, you are missing hidden grime.

Most toilet seats pop off easily, and removing it once a month lets you clean underneath the hinges and seat base where odors love to hide. This is one of the biggest differences between a surface clean and a professional-level clean.

Trust me, your bathroom will smell fresher immediately.

The bowl should always be cleaned before the rest of the toilet.

Use a clinging gel toilet bowl cleaner so it sticks to the porcelain and works longer. Scrub under the rim and let the cleaner do its job. 

Pro Tip: To tackle hard water, rust, or stubborn rings, try specialty cleaners or a pumice stone used gently and wet can make a huge difference.

Also, starting with the bowl gives cleaners more time to work while you tackle the rest.

Disinfectants need time to work. Spray the entire toilet and let it sit before wiping.

When wiping, always start at the top and work your way down. Fold your towel into sections so you always use a clean side. This prevents spreading germs and keeps the clean actually clean.

Pro tip. If you wear hoodies while cleaning, tuck those strings in. Toilet water is not a fashion accessory.

Many bathroom odors come from the floor around the toilet, not the bowl itself. Spray the base and surrounding floor, let it sit, and wipe clean. This step alone can eliminate lingering smells.

Pro Tip: When you are done, disinfect your toilet brush and let it air dry before putting it away. A wet brush stored in a holder becomes a breeding ground for grime and odor.

A clean toilet changes how your entire bathroom feels. When you follow the right steps and clean in the right order, the job becomes faster, easier, and far more effective.
