Happy Tuesday, My Clean Freak Fam! ๐
Today, I have a little challenge for youโฆGo look at your walls.ย ๐
Get up close. Look around the light switches, behind the garbage can, down the hallway, and anywhere a childโs hand, dog, shoe or chair can meet the wall. Suddenly what you didnโt see before is in plain sight! ๐
Walls are one of those things we just donโt think about cleaning very often. But over time they collect fingerprints, dust, cooking grease, pet slobber, shoe scuffs, mystery splatters, and maybe even the occasional crayon masterpiece if you have little ones. Hereโs the crazy part: dirty walls can make an entire room look dingy even when everything else is spotless. Sometimes what looks like a room that needs fresh paint really just needs a good cleaning.
So before you start picking out paint colors:ย today Iโm showing you the easiest way to clean walls without damaging the paint, leaving streaks, or accidentally turning one little scuff into a home-improvement project.
Let's Go! ๐
Step One: Dust Before You Do Anything Else
I know, I know. You are staring at your wall thinking, "Brandon, it does not even look dusty, I am skipping this." Please do not skip this. If you spray cleaner onto a dusty wall, that dust turns into a gritty, streaky paste that is a nightmare to remove. Dry dusting first sets your whole clean up for success. Reach for an extendable Swiffer duster so you can hit high spots without a ladder, or a reusable microfiber duster that you can toss in the wash when you are done. Always start at the top and work your way down to the floor so nothing gets missed.
Pro Tip: The microfiber duster kind of looks like a lightsaber, so go ahead and make the sound effects. Nobody is watching. Cleaning should be a little fun. โ๏ธ
๐งด Step Two: Mix Your Secret Weapon
You do not need a fancy spray for this. Fill a spray bottle with a cup or two of water and add about a teaspoon of blue Dawn dish soap. That is it. Dawn is the Swiss Army knife of cleaning, and a little bit cuts right through everyday wall grime without leaving a soapy mess behind. A little goes a long way here, so resist the urge to dump in half the bottle.
Pro Tip: Do not spray straight at the wall. Trust me, I learned this one the hard way. Spray at an angle and lightly mist the surface. Blasting it head on uses too much cleaner, causes drips, and can leave streaks or even damage the paint. ๐ฆ
Step Three: Clean in Sections With a Flat Mop
Grab a microfiber flat mop, wet the head in the sink, then wring it out really well. We want damp, not dripping. Work in 5 to 10 foot sections: mist the wall, then run the mop straight up and straight down, almost like you are painting. And hey, the good news is this is way easier than actual painting. There is a reason this channel is not called Paint That Up.
Why sections? Because if you spray the whole room first, your cleaner dries before you ever reach it with the mop. That is wasted effort and a possible paint hazard. Small sections keep everything working the way it should.
๐พ Step Four: The Weird Hacks for Stubborn Spots
Run into a mark that will not budge? Try a baking soda paste (equal parts baking soda and water, mixed to a runny toothpaste consistency) or a melamine sponge like a magic eraser. Both are abrasive, so go gentle and stop the second you see paint lifting. For sticky build up like hairspray in the bathroom or grease behind the stove, Zep Foaming Wall Cleaner melts it right off.
Now for the hacks that you might find very helpful:
A wet tennis ball erases scuffs shockingly well. That is an old janitorial trick we used on floors, and it works on walls too.ย
And permanent marker? Spray it with plain sunscreen, scrub gently with a soft brush, and wipe it away. I did not believe it either until I watched a Sharpie disappear right off the wall.
๐ Step Five: How Often Should You Actually Do This?
This does NOT need to become another weekly chore. ๐ For most homes, giving your walls a good cleaning about once a year is plenty. Spring cleaning is a great time to do it since youโre already giving everything else a refresh. Then just spot-clean fingerprints, scuffs, and mystery marks as you notice them throughout the year.
One important heads-up: be extra careful with flat or matte paint. These finishes tend to be less durable and can show marks or damage much more easily when cleaned.
Always start with the gentlest method possible, use as little moisture as you can, and test first. Sometimes, if a flat-painted wall is really dirty or damaged, repainting may actually be the better option. Better to know that BEFORE you start scrubbing!
โ The Clean Takeaway
Walls are one of those things you donโt realize are dirty until you clean one section and suddenly thinkโฆโWait. THATโS what color my wall is supposed to be?โย
And thatโs why I love this cleaning job. Itโs pretty simple, you donโt need a bunch of fancy products, and the payoff can be SUPER satisfying. Give your walls a good cleaning about once a year, spot-clean those mystery marks when they show up, and donโt overthink it.
Sometimes your room doesnโt need a makeover or a fresh coat of paint. It just needs a good clean! Now stand back, admire your work, and enjoy that wonderful Clean Freak feeling! ๐โจ
