๐Ÿ’ก Brandonโ€™s Top Tip of the Week:ย  Once a month, clean your garbage cans with my DIY vinegar mix: 1 cup white vinegar, 1 cup water, and a teaspoon of Blue Dawn dish soap. The vinegar neutralizes odor, the Dawn cuts the grease. Spray it, let it sit a few minutes, wipe it out, done.

Welcome Home Clean Freak Fam!

Did you know there is a 100% chance your house has a smell.ย Good news? You can't smell it.ย Bad news? Your visiting Family and Friends can!

Here is the wild part about house smells. Your nose adapts to whatever is happening in your home within about a minute of walking in. It is called olfactory fatigue, or what most people know as "nose blindness." Think about it like the ticking of a clock or the hum of your refrigerator. At first you notice it, but after a while your brain tunes it out. The same thing happens with odors. Your guests get the full unfiltered experience while you sit there blissfully unaware. The fix is not a stronger candle. The fix is removing the source. Here is how we do it.

Letโ€™s Go! ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ Take Out the Trash Every Single Day

I know, I know, this one sounds painfully obvious. But this is the number one source of mystery odors in almost every home I walk into. Kitchen trash, bathroom trash, the little one in the office that has banana peel from Tuesday in it.

All of it. Every. Single. Day. The smell does not start when the bag is full. It starts the moment something stinky goes in.

Do not forget the can itself. Even with a liner, drips and grime build up on the bottom and sides over time, and that is where the funk lives.

๐Ÿšฐ Deodorize the Garbage Disposal

If your kitchen has that faint "something died near the sink" energy, your disposal is the prime suspect. Old food, grease, and gunk build up on the blades and inside the chamber, and no amount of running water rinses it out.

Give your sink a normal clean first, then drop in a garbage disposal cleaning pod, run the water, and flip the switch. The pods foam up, scrub the inside of the unit, and leave behind a fresh scent that actually smells like a kitchen and not a forgotten leftover container.

โ

๐Ÿงช Pro Tip: No pods? Toss in a handful of ice cubes with a few lemon peels and run the disposal for 20 seconds. The ice scrubs the blades and the lemon oils freshen things up in a pinch.

๐Ÿ’จ Invest in a Good Air Purifier

This one is an investment, but it is 100% worth it. Air purifiers pull dust, dander, smoke particles, and all those floating microscopic odor carriers right out of the air. Three rules when you buy one:

  1. Make sure it has a true HEPA filter. Accept no substitutes.

  2. Make sure it is sized correctly for the room. An undersized unit in a big living room is basically a fan.

  3. Replace the filter on schedule. A dirty filter is just blowing trapped funk back into the room.

๐Ÿงฝ Stick to a Cleaning Routine

The houses that always smell great are not the ones cleaned in one massive Saturday meltdown. They are the ones with small consistent routines. Dishes daily. Quick vacuum weekly to catch pet hair and dander before it spreads. Bathroom wipe-down twice a week.

You know your home best. Pick the two or three high-traffic spots that get funky fastest (for most of us it is the kitchen sink, the bathroom, and wherever the pets nap) and put those on a rotation. Routine beats marathon every single time.

โ

๐Ÿงช Pro Tip: If you want my exact weekly cleaning checklists (the same ones I use in my own house), the Clean Squad members over on Patreon get them as a free download. Years of janitor-brain, boiled down to one page.

๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Open the Windows (Even Just a Crack)

Stale indoor air is sneaky. Even a clean house can smell off if the air has been sitting still for weeks. Cracking a window for 5 to 10 minutes flushes the stagnant air out and brings fresh air in. You do not have to freeze. Even in winter, a tiny crack for ten minutes makes a noticeable difference without tanking your heating bill.

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ Use Scent the Right Way

Here is the truth most people get wrong: a fresh smelling home is not about what you add. It is about what you remove. Candles and air fresheners are the bow on top, not the gift.

Once the source of the smell is gone, then pick a scent you love. We use Febreze on softer items like couches and throw blankets because every time someone sits down it releases a fresh hit. Look for products that say "neutralize odor" on the label, not just "fresh scent." Big difference.

๐Ÿงบ Wash the Soft Stuff

Throw blankets, couch covers, decorative pillows, pet beds, bath mats. These absorb everything: cooking smells, pet smells, body oils, and they release it slowly back into the air for weeks. Toss them in the wash once or twice a month. If you have pets, lean toward twice. Our dog Mabel has a favorite blanket, and trust me, it goes through the wash often.

๐ŸŽจ Wash Your Walls Once a Year

Walls absorb cooking grease, smoke, and odors over time, especially in the kitchen and bathroom. Once a year, give them a quick wash: a teaspoon of dish soap in a spray bottle of water, spray at an angle, then go top to bottom with a damp flat mop like you are painting. Spring is the perfect time to knock this out.

๐ŸŒฟ Add Houseplants

If you have a green thumb (mine is decidedly not green, my wife handles this department), plants gently clean the air and add a fresh living scent to the room. Snake plants, pothos, and peace lilies are some of the hardest to kill and the best at freshening the air.

๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Change the HVAC Filter

This is the silent house-stinker nobody thinks about. A dirty AC or furnace filter pushes funky air through every single room in your house, on repeat. Replace it on the schedule your manufacturer recommends. Bonus: your system runs better, lasts longer, and your electric bill thanks you. Put it on your phone calendar so you never forget.

๐Ÿงฝ Clean Your Vacuum Regularly!ย

Over time our vacuums get a lot of use in a well lived in home. So taking time to replace the bag or clean the dirt receptacle in the vacuum can prevent spreading odors we canโ€™t detect anymore.

๐ŸŠ Try a Stovetop Pot Simmer

All-natural, cheap, and you probably have the ingredients sitting in your kitchen right now. Here is the fall and winter version we use:

1 chopped orange, 1 chopped apple, a few cinnamon sticks, 1 teaspoon whole cloves, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Toss it all in a pot of water and simmer on low for a few hours. Add water as it evaporates. Your whole house smells like a cozy bakery, and not a single chemical was involved.
