Hey Clean Freaks!

There is nothing quite as frustrating as stepping out of a hot, glorious shower, reaching for a fluffy towel, and getting hit with a smell that can only be described as "wet dog who lost a fight with a gym sock." You did everything right. You washed them. You folded them. And yet here they are, funky as ever.ย

Take heart, Clean Freak Fam, because that musty mystery has a cause, and today we are going to fix it for good. By the end of this newsletter you are going to look at your towel pile like a project you cannot wait to conquer.

Letโ€™s Go! ๐Ÿ‘‡

โ

๐Ÿ’ก Brandonโ€™s Top Tip of the Week: Vinegar is a better fabric softener than actual fabric softener. It strips away buildup and leaves towels soft and fresh, no waxy residue required.

๐Ÿ”„ Step One: Reset Your Towels

Before we prevent the funk, we have to get rid of it. Toss your towels into the washer, but resist the urge to cram every towel you own in there. An overcrowded drum means the water and cleaner cannot reach the fibers, especially in a high-efficiency machine. Aim for three to five towels so they can tumble freely.

๐Ÿถ Step Two: Vinegar Is the Star

Here is the magic move. Add one to two cups of plain white vinegar straight to the drum and skip the detergent entirely. One cup for mildly musty, two cups for towels that have truly given up on life. Run it on hot with the bulky or towel setting if you have one, since that extra water and agitation scrubs deeper. Got a soak feature? Use it and give the vinegar time to work.

๐Ÿงผ Step Three: The Real Culprit (Spoiler, It's Your Soap)

Most stinky towels are not dirty, they are overdosed. When we use too much detergent, the excess never fully rinses out. It dries sticky and tacky, then it attracts dirt and bacteria every single time you use the towel. That gunk traps moisture, and trapped moisture is where the funk is born. Vinegar saves the day by stripping all of that residue away and taking the odors with it.

๐ŸŒ€ Step Four: A Second Wash, the Right Way

After the reset, do not head for the dryer yet. Run a second cycle, this time with detergent, but only about two tablespoons. That is genuinely all you ever need. Fill that cap to the top and you will be right back to sticky, smelly square one.

โ

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip: Never add fabric softener to your towels. It coats the fibers in a waxy film that kills absorbency and locks odors in. Your towels want to dry you off, not slide off.

โ˜€๏ธ Step Five: Get Them Bone Dry, Fast

This is the step everyone underestimates. Dry your towels quickly and completely on medium to high heat using the bulky setting. The goal is bone dry, no exceptions. If they feel even a little damp when the cycle ends, run it again. Fold a slightly damp towel and you seal moisture into the folds, and that is a guaranteed musty smell waiting for your next shower.

๐Ÿงช Still Stinky? Bring In the Sanitizer

Did all of that and your towels still funk it up? Time for a laundry sanitizer, which is built to kill lingering bacteria. My go-to move is soaking the towels overnight in a bin of water with the sanitizer mixed in, then running a normal wash and drying fully. This rescues almost any towel, and it works wonders on gym clothes and that beloved but pungent dog blanket too.

โ

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip: Start with vinegar, not sanitizer. You usually need the vinegar to strip the residue first, then reach for the sanitizer only if the smell holds on.

๐Ÿงฏ The Sneaky Sources Nobody Checks

Here is what most people never think about. The machines themselves get gross. Mold and mildew hiding in your washer transfer straight onto everything you wash. Deep clean your washer regularly, and if you have a front loader, clean its filter monthly, because that filter is a notorious funk factory.

Then there is your dryer vent. A clogged vent traps hot, wet air inside the dryer, which means longer dry times and damper towels. Clear your lint trap every load and clean the vent itself once or twice a year.

โœจBonus: a clean vent is also a major fire-safety win, so this one protects more than your nose.
